Tweaking Icon Catalog icon's

Depending on the IRIX versions, and Nekoware installations (which contains bugs), you may have to tweak the Irix Icon Catalog icon's. IRIX was way ahead of its time. It hads vector icons (fti files) and rules to apply these icons to different kind of files (rules ftr files).

For the system Icon Catalog:

• Default icons (fti) are in /usr/lib/filetype/install/iconlib
• Icon rules (ftr) are in /usr/lib/filetype/install

For Nekoware:

• Icons are in /usr/lib/filetype/local/iconlib
• Rules are in /usr/lib/filetype/local

Rules matches different criterias, mainly tags, or calling names. In an ftr file, there are lines like:

MATCH       (tag == 0x00010646) || glob("Mozilla"));

On IRIX binaries can be tagged. To know the tag of a binary:

$ tag -q /var/netscape/mozilla/mozilla-bin
/var/netscape/mozilla/mozilla-bin is tagged with Octal: 014236267141  Decimal: 1652125281  Hex: 0x62796e61

If you want to set a tag:

# tag 0x00010646 /var/netscape/mozilla/mozilla-bin

On the contrary, glob rule is usefull to match the caller script. For Icon Catalog, these scripts are in /usr/lib/desktop/iconcatalog/pages/C/Applications:

During the installation of my workstation, I encountered some things to tweak.

• zsh from Nekoware beta is buggy, you must unquote the tag which isn't interpreted correctly.
• On IRIX 6.5.30, Mozilla is called from scripts, so you should use the glob condition in the MATCH directive (like in the example above).

You should update the icon's database:

# cd /usr/lib/filetype && make -u

Then log out / log in.
